and control mice. To test whether IL-19 upregulates T-helper 2 (Th2) cytokines, IL-19 complementary DNA was injected into healthy mice using intramuscular electroporation, and serum levels of IL-4, IL-5, IL-10, and IL-13 were later monitored. After injection of IL-19 into asthmatic mice, IL-13 and immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels were measured. To determine if IL-19 could induce Th2 cytokine production in vitro, IL-19 was incubated with CD4 T cells and IL-4, IL-5, IL-10, and IL-13 levels were quantified in the cell-culture supernatant.

Inflammatory basis of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.

RATIONALE Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) is a highly prevalent condition with unclear pathogenesis. Two competing theories of the pathogenesis of EIB differ regarding the inflammatory basis of this condition. OBJECTIVES Our goals were to establish whether epithelial cell and mast cell activation with release of inflammatory mediators occurs during EIB and how histamine and cystein...

Soluble CD40 ligand and soluble P-selectin in allergic asthma patients during exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.

BACKGROUND The interactions between CD40 and its ligand, CD40L, control humoral and cell-mediated immune responses. CD40 ligation may promote asthma-associated inflammatory responses in the airways. Many reports confirm the inflammatory basis of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) in asthmatics. METHODS The study was conducted in a group of 19 asthmatic patients (11 with EIB, 8 without...

Exercise induced bronchoconstriction in adults: evidence based diagnosis and management.

EIB is defined as “the transient narrowing of the lower airway following exercise in the presence or absence of clinically recognized asthma.” Bronchoconstriction typically develops within 15 minutes after exercise and spontaneously resolves within 60 minutes. After an episode of EIB, there is often a refractory period of about 1-3 hours in which, if exercise is repeated, the bronchoconstrictio...

Mechanisms of bronchoconstriction from nonimmunologic environmental stimuli.

Athma is characterized by repeated episodes of bronchoconstriction, often triggered by environmental stimuli. Since much of the therapy of asthma is aimed at preventing these episodes of bronchoconstriction, understanding the mechanisms by which environmental stimuli cause bronchoconstriction has obvious clinical importance. This review will discuss the general mechanisms by which inhaled agent...

Imitators of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction

Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) is described by transient narrowing of the airways after exercise. It occurs in approximately 10% of the general population, while athletes may show a higher prevalence, especially in cold weather and ice rink athletes. Diagnosis of EIB is often made on the basis of self-reported symptoms without objective lung function tests, however, the presence of ...

Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in elite long-distance runners in Brazil.

OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction among elite long-distance runners in Brazil and whether there is a difference in the training loads among athletes with and without exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study involving elite long-distance runners with neither current asthma symptoms nor a diagnosis of exercise-ind...
